Running is one of the highlights of the moment in the world of healthy lifestyle. The practice has become so popular on the streets that it has brought into vogue a new term on social media: “ Running Era ” — in Portuguese, “The Era of Running”.
Searching for “Running Era” in the search bar on Instagram, TikTok or Pinterest will bring up thousands of running-related content . The most common of these are videos and photos of people running, both in competitions and during regular training.

Data from the Brazilian Association of Street Races (ABCR), São Silvestre and Ticket Sports show that interest in this sport has really grown in Brazil. In 2023, 150,000 street races were held and there was a 13% increase in the number of participants compared to the previous year. Today, it is estimated that there are 13 million runners in the country.
For digital influencer Ju Mamute (Julia Giannella), who shares her healthy routine on TikTok and Instagram and has more than 2 million followers on both social networks, Running Era is on the rise because it has sparked a new way of looking at running . “The group of people who run has always existed, but now we are looking at it in a different way. The internet saw running as a way to inspire people, to motivate people to have a healthier life”, he says.

Ju is an example of someone who followed the Running Era trend . The influencer says that she was born into a sporting family and has practiced several different sports, but when the Covid-19 pandemic began , she began to neglect healthy eating and physical exercise. After two years of a sedentary lifestyle, she decided to give the gym a chance, where she remains strong and steady to this day in her third year of bodybuilding.
Last year, in search of an enjoyable cardiovascular exercise, the content creator added running to her lifestyle . “I saw a lot of people running and the feeling of running seemed incredible,” she says. However, unlike her experience with bodybuilding, Ju didn’t adapt to running right away: “Running is a very difficult sport, I would run for two minutes and then get tired.”
After two months, she gave up, along with the conviction that this sport was not for her. " People who don't understand running and start from scratch think that we'll start knowing, but we don't," she says.
When the influencer moved from the countryside of São Paulo to Rio de Janeiro , she tried again. This time, with a different mindset: “I didn’t start out saying ‘I need to run 5km, 10km’. I decided I needed to start trying, and that’s when I started to enjoy running.” In her first street race, she managed to run 5km — without having run 1km straight before.

Julia has been involved in the world of running for even longer: it's been 20 years since the influencer and journalist started running. She says that she used to go to YouTube to learn more about the sport: “There was no such thing as a running influencer, people didn't talk about it. Running was a normal part of life.” For fun, she started giving tips about the sport in videos on Snapchat and Instagram and, before she knew it, by 2015 she had accumulated around 40 thousand followers.

In her approximately 10 years producing content about running, Julia believes that the boom in the sport began in 2022. And of course: the Running Era phenomenon impacted her number of followers and changed the pace of engagement on her profile. “It went viral a lot, now it’s easier to go viral with running posts, so my number of followers has increased a lot more. I think I’m reaching a lot of people,” she says.
For both Julia and Gabi, there are two main reasons for the increase in the number of runners in recent years: the discovery of a practical and enjoyable physical activity and the feeling of belonging .
“People are discovering that they can find their strength, growth and success in something they didn’t think was possible before. Running Era is about meeting new people, discovering that you can grow and find a new place for yourself in your own era ,” Julia describes.
In Gabi’s words, “ Running Era is a movement of people deciding to take care of their own health , but finding something they enjoy, because running brings this connection , this belonging, this community. It’s something you can do in a group, you can do alone, on trips, you can do it wherever you go!”

“ Trying . It’s not easy for anyone, it probably won’t be easy for you, but it will always be worth it”, Ju Mamute.
“Start slowly because it is a sport that requires a lot of frequency and conditioning for you to improve, but you need to be patient”, Gabi Guther.
“ Respecting the process to establish a long-term relationship. The strongest and healthiest relationships take time,” Julia Sette.

The respective advice from interviewees Ju Mamute, Gabi Guther and Julia Sette forms a true consensus . They all talk about the need to understand your own pace so that the process does not end in giving up. In addition, they reinforce the importance of seeking out professionals and appropriate training in order to correctly prepare the body and muscles for the sport and avoid injuries .
After working on your mind, another factor that can give you a boost in your running, according to influencers, is finding a beautiful view to enjoy.
