The
Pinacoteca de São Paulo opens next Saturday, July 31st, the exhibition
John Graz: tropical and modern idyll at Estação Pinacoteca. The exhibition brings together around 155 items that revisit the trajectory of Graz, one of the most important names in
modernism in Brazil , focusing on his work as a visual artist and the dedication of his works to indigenous themes, fauna and flora, history and Brazilian popular culture.
The works in the exhibition come from a donation made by the Graz Institute to the Pinacoteca, as well as loans from other institutions and private collections. The program takes place in the year preceding the
centenary of the Modern Art Week , which had Graz as one of the participants. .
The curation by
Fernanda Pitta , senior curator, and
Thierry Freitas , curatorial assistant at the museum, highlights Graz's dedication to creating a modern and tropical imagery through his paintings, drawings and studies, also reflecting the artist's multiplicity and versatility. These works feature representations of indigenous people, images of nature, festivities such as carnival and gaucho festivals, Brazilian workers such as the jangadeiros, as well as historical narratives, such as those that portray the Portuguese invasion of Brazil.
The exhibition organization of the works follows
thematic groups related to the main subjects worked on by the artist: Arcádia; Indigenous Themes; Brazilian Nature, History and Popular Culture; Indigenism and Abstraction and Design.
Although the focus is on visual production, the exhibition displays furniture that demonstrates
Graz's interest in creating modern and Brazilian design , as well as studies of architecture, decoration and photos of the environments that the artist designed.
