The Warak Kayu microlibrary , designed by the Shau architecture firm, impresses with its grand staircase, mesh flooring and large community swing. Located in Semarang, Indonesia , it is a public reading room for the city of Central Java, but also functions as a mini community center .

This is the fifth “microlibrary” project the firm has built in Indonesia. The goal is to improve access to learning for those living in the country’s poorest communities.

The architecture firm deliberately added some playful details to make the library engaging for children and families. But most of its unusual features also serve some kind of function. For example, the mesh floor creates a comfortable environment for children to sit and read a book, while parents can watch them from below.

“It is important to have this multi-programmatic approach to make the library a popular place , as reading alone is still not considered a fun activity in the country,” explain architects Florian Heinzelmann and Daliana Suryawinata .

The entire building structure is constructed from a variety of FSC -certified timbers, including bangkirai, a locally sourced tropical hardwood.

The structural system is highly decorative, although it is largely made from scraps. An overhanging roof, which provides passive shading, is supported on cross beams , as is the floor plate below. Thanks to these various elements, the building does not need air conditioning , despite the tropical climate. "The building can be seen as a living educational site for wood materials and construction techniques," said the architects.
