New Google store in New York stands out for sustainable design

Many of the materials used were selected for their sustainable credentials, enabling the project to achieve LEED Platinum certification.

Designed by architecture firm Reddymade , Google has opened its first physical retail space on the ground floor of the former Port Authority Building – a vast art deco structure located in New York City ’s Chelsea neighborhood.

In addition to being a place to buy and repair devices, the store offers a wealth of immersive experiences so customers can see firsthand how Google seeks to integrate technology into everyday life.

“The space was designed to be a physical expression of what Google stands for ,” Ivy Ross, Google’s vice president of hardware design, told Fast Company.

Due to the use of many sustainable materials , the project achieved LEED Platinum certification. Among these are floors made from 100% recycled factory waste by the Swedish company Bolon, and acoustic panels with a felt finish made from 100% PET plastic.
