Itamarati Chairs with Advice from Bem Te Vi, by Maria Thereza Alves (Ruy Teixeira)

From November 25 to February 24, 2024, Galeria Jaqueline Martins and Casa Zalszupin – a house museum designed by Lissa Carmona under joint management of ETEL and Almeida & Dale Galeria de Arte – will host the concomitant and complementary exhibition “ LABINAC: What we have always done ”, curated by Jacopo Crivelli Visconti.

"LABINAC: What we have always done" is an exhibition that takes place in two very different spaces, where these very special objects are placed in relation and friction with contexts that allow for different readings of them. At Casa Zalszupin, the dialogue is mainly with objects produced by the architect and designer himself, with a domestic and familiar environment, although, evidently, extraordinary. At Galeria Jaqueline Martins, in the relatively aseptic space of an art gallery, the main conversation is with works in which appear, often in the background of the scene, 'a chair, a table, a lamp, a vase', that is, objects that we usually do not look at, or that we consider merely 'furniture'", reveals Jacopo Crivelli Visconti. The exhibition provokes and challenges in both contexts – from Jorge Zalszupin’s residence to the aseptic environment of the art gallery – the boundaries between art and design.

The LABINAC design collective was founded in Berlin by artists Maria Thereza Alves and Jimmie Durham (1940-2021) and today is also made up of guest artists and designers who dedicate their work to defending the rights and culture of indigenous peoples, acting as a design collective with the dual objective of designing and making things and also supporting the artisanal work of the indigenous peoples of Latin America.

In partnership with the ETEL brand, founder and artist Maria Thereza Alves created two side tables and proposed two interventions in reissues of the Jockey and Itamaraty chairs signed by Jorge Zalszupin, as part of the series: “Advice from Bem Te Vi” .
For the two side tables, Alves studied the invasive flora along the old banks of the Saracura River in São Paulo. He went to the Caçandoca Quilombo in Ubatuba for more in-depth studies and collected seeds and leaves of the invasive flora of the Atlantic Forest such as: Jackfruit, Beach Almond, Beach Apricot, Kingdom Sugar Cane and others that were the raw material for the experiments to develop the pieces.
