Praça das Artes project revitalizes the center and connects with the city
The project surrounds the old listed building of the Dramatic and Musical Conservatory of São Paulo and presents itself as a building and square, capable of hosting artistic activities and the public that frequents the center. The first part of the complex, measuring 29 thousand m², was inaugurated in December 2012. The implementation of the project received the APCA Award (São Paulo Association of Art Critics) for Best Architectural Work of 2012, the Building of the Year award for 2013 by the Icon Awards, held by Icon Magazine, and was a finalist for the ' 'Stunning Projects of the Americas', from Mies Crown Hall Americas 2014. The site is a must-see for architecture lovers. The project is a contemporary counterpoint to the architecture and tradition of the Municipal Theater. Several deteriorated properties were expropriated for construction, including the conservatory, which was restored and incorporated into the complex's design. The Cairo and Saci cinemas were also used, with the former having its facade preserved. "As in almost the entire central region of the city, this place has a chaotic building neighborhood from a volumetric point of view. However, it has a privileged situation of humanity around it, full of diversity, vitality, a mix of social classes, of uses , of conflicts and tensions characteristic of the big city – a space for coexistence and the search for tolerance", the architects conclude. Parts of the work are still in progress and have been inaugurated from the center to the ends, gradually revealing the construction to the city. The building also receives new structures, such as state-of-the-art rooms for music and dance. Currently , the project for the Square and other revitalization works in the center are led by the Secretary of Urban Infrastructure and Works, Victor Aly. In addition to classes and common areas, Praça das Artes offers an intense cultural program that can be found on the Fundação Theatro Muncipal website.
