The
Work of the Year award, developed for the fourth year in a row by the Archdaily portal, aims to recognize
the most inspiring architectural works published during 2020 that represent the identity of their local contexts. The hundreds of works that participated in the award originated from
ten Portuguese-speaking countries : Brazil, Portugal, Mozambique, Angola, Guinea-Bissau, Timor-Leste, Equatorial Guinea, Macau, Cape Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe. Decided by public vote, the three winning works are those that "made the greatest impact on the profession" –
and two of them are Brazilian . Check them out below!
1st place: Public Emergency Hospital of São Bernardo do Campo, by SPBR Arquitetos
Using architecture to improve the quality of urban life, the
Public Emergency Hospital is part of the hospital complex in São Bernardo do Campo, in the interior of São Paulo, and of the health facilities managed by the ABC Foundation. The hospital functions as an entrance to the complex, called the hospital door, and is the
first destination for ambulances in the region.

Divided into
two superimposed volumes , the building was created by
SPBR Arquitetos , an architecture firm based in the capital of São Paulo. The upper volume, like a three-story bar measuring 115 meters long and 15 meters wide, houses 159 hospital beds for pediatric and adult hospitalization.
Using exclusively
prefabricated and modular construction systems , the
1000m² Prefabricated project in Portugal was planned from the outset to be a
quick, economical construction that could be modified over time; in line with the different needs that might arise over time.

The two programs that make up the building were positioned on
two different floors : the first is used as a multifunctional service area, in direct contact with the public road; the upper floor is intended for housing units – six 45 m² Gomos System modules.

3rd place: RN Residence, by Jacobsen Arquitetura
This residence in Itaúna, Minas Gerais, designed for a couple, their children and grandchildren, is located on the edge of a large dam that offers countless water sports. Designed by the Jacobsen Arquitetura office, the
RN Residence was developed with a single-story plan, centered around a
large patio with a view , which is delimited by living rooms and balconies on the side and by bedrooms at the back.

The native Vinhático tree impressed the architects responsible, who designed a wooden deck under the tree's canopy to
connect the house to the garden in a natural way. The huge, flat, landscaped area, defined by the level of the roots, gives access to the wide, unobstructed view of the dam just ahead.
