A line of sustainable furniture will be launched at
CASACOR Santa Catarina next Friday, September 23. It is a collaboration between
Eco Flame Garden and
Projeto Tamar , which has developed a collection of
garden poufs whose seat will be partially filled with fishing nets abandoned or lost at sea – which,
according to Greenpeace, account for more than 85% of the plastic waste in the oceans . One of the ocean's greatest dangers,
ghost fishing – when equipment designed to capture marine animals, such as fishing nets, lines, hooks and other traps, are abandoned, discarded or forgotten at sea – is responsible for colossal damage, killing thousands of animals daily.
And not only that: even human beings have been affected by ghost fishing , with countless cases of death by drowning involving swimmers, surfers and even fishermen, who were trapped in ghost nets.
According to the United Nations, around
640,000 tons of fishing gear are abandoned at sea every year. That's why this initiative is so important: after being removed from the sea, fishing nets are shredded and then reused to serve as filler. of the upholstery.
It is worth noting that most of these nets are not discarded by fishermen, but rather lost on the high seas.
