Assa-peixe helps relieve colds and flu due to its anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties. Consumed as tea, it combats persistent cough by soothing mucus in the airways. Recent studies indicate its antioxidant potential that contributes to cellular protection.

The cultivation of assa-peixe (Arrabidaea chica) requires some specific care to ensure healthy growth of the plant. Here are some tips for effectively cultivating this plant:
Assa-peixe is a tropical and subtropical plant, so it prefers warm and humid climates. It grows best in temperatures between 20°C and 30°C, and does not tolerate frost. If you are growing in a cooler region, consider cultivating it in an projects or protected environment like a greenhouse.
This plant needs good sunlight exposure to develop properly. It should be planted in locations that receive direct light, but without excessive exposure to very intense sun, especially during the hottest hours of the day, as this can cause leaf burns. Partial sun is a good option.
Assa-peixe prefers well-drained, rich organic matter soil that is slightly acidic, with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. If the soil is heavy or clayey, add sand or organic compost to improve drainage. Ensure that the soil is well-aerated to avoid water accumulation, which can harm the roots.
Assa-peixe likes moisture, so it is important to keep the soil slightly moist but not soggy. Water the plant regularly, especially during periods of intense heat, but avoid pooling water around the roots. Watering should be less frequent in winter, when plant growth is slower.
To promote healthy growth, fertilize the plant during the active growth period (spring and summer) with a balanced fertilizer. Use an organic fertilizer or an NPK 10-10-10 fertilizer to supply the necessary nutrients. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can hinder the plant’s development.
The plant can become quite vining and invasive, so it may be necessary to prune it regularly to control its growth and maintain its shape. Pruning also helps stimulate the growth of new shoots and can improve flower production. Remove dry or damaged branches to prevent the development of diseases.
