Banksy's art began to emerge amidst the underground scene in Bristol in the late 1980s and his murals are easily found on the streets of the city. In the 1990s, his work attracted attention for its use of the stencil technique, in which applies the design through a cut in the paper through which the ink passes, ensuring speed in the work.

In his works, the artist, in addition to painting ironic figures and catchphrases on the walls of buildings and walls, leaves messages loaded with social and political content. Even before he became famous, in 2003, Banksy appeared on the cover of the seventh studio album by band Blur and painted £10 notes replacing Queen Elizabeth II's face with Princess Diana's – they were later sold for £200. Banksy has visited Palestine a few times and each time he has left his art spread across the city walls, including the mural “ Soldier Throwing Flowers” (2005), which shows a citizen with his face covered by a scarf throwing a bunch of flowers instead of a bomb, and “Stop and Search” (2007), painted in Bethlehem, where the artist reverses the roles by showing a soldier leaning against the wall being searched by a girl. In 2006, Banksy entered Disneyland in California as a tourist, carrying a backpack with an inflatable doll dressed in the uniform of Guantanamo Bay inmates. Bypassing security, he inflated the doll and positioned it near a roller coaster.

In 2009, the exhibition “Banksy vs Bristol Museum" , in which his works interacted with the permanent collection, attracted around 300,000 people in 12 weeks. The following year, Banksy directed the documentary “Exit Through the Gift Shop” , which tells the story of the story of Thierry Guetta, known as Mr. Brainwash, a French immigrant living in Los Angeles and his observations on street art. The documentary premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2010, and was awarded the Spirit of Award, considered the Oscar of independent cinema. In 2012, Banksy painted the mural “Slave Labor” on the side wall of a Poundland store in Wood Green, London. The mural shows a child kneeling on the floor working on a sewing machine. The work represents a protest against the use of slave labor to make souvenirs for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the 2012 London Olympics. A year later, the mural was removed from the wall and put up for sale on an online website. Later , was listed for sale at Fine Art Auctions Miami for half a million dollars. Despite claiming that the work was acquired through a legitimate transaction, and having received three bids, the institution suspended the sale. In 2002, Banksy painted a mural in London titled "Girl With Balloon" . On October 5, 2019, at Sotheby's, the world's most famous art auction house, Banksy's painting, which reproduced the graffiti painted on the London wall was sold for the equivalent of 5 million reais. As soon as the auctioneer hit the hammer on the table, a mechanism started working and the bottom of the painting was chopped off. The combined performance attracted global attention and the value of the frame doubled.
