In a play on "old and new," Italian designer Simone Bonnani has just created a series of coffee tables for Moooi , called Obon . Straddling a play on imperfection and craftsmanship, the pieces combine simplified geometric shapes with the look of aged and terracotta texture to design timeless furniture items.

Simone began by sketching three “pure, irregular and graphic” shapes on a canvas before constructing molds and injecting them into terracotta clay. Together with a ceramicist from Veneto, Italy, Bonnani experimented with a selection of glazes to give the table’s surfaces a more tactile appearance.

"We worked on its tactile aspect by including various thicknesses of chamotte (a ceramic raw material with a high percentage of silica and alumina), with the aim of generating a perfect blend between the present and the past," concludes the designer.
