A democratic, educational, eclectic art surrounded by love is what defines the work of Rio de Janeiro designer Marcos Scorzelli . With a degree in product design from PUC-Rio, the artist began his career innovating in architectural projects as a corporate interior designer and set designer. But it was through a love story between father and son that Marcos brought his minimalist animals made of carbon steel to life. “It’s a long love story , I always say that,” he reveals.

From the hands of his father, the visual artist and architect Roberto Scorzelli (1938/2012), came the first paper animals that they played with together, when Marcos and his sister were still children. In the late 1990s, the designer rediscovered some of these drawings – which were stored in his father's drawer – and, thus, the verb “to create” began to be conjugated in the plural by the two artists. “These initial animals were really a game between father and son. I would make an animal, leave it on his table, he would shape it and give it back to me. Then I would shape it and give it back to him…”, says Marcos.

The idea was always to transform them into large-format sculptures . The key was not to lose the concept, not to waste material , without welding or cutting. After his father's death in 2012, Marcos continued to fuel his imagination to bring these creatures to life. Using his experience in geometry, computer graphics and his training as a product designer, Scorzelli began to produce carbon steel sculptures .

“This was a new experience for an architect who worked in an office every day, who understood the corporate world, and suddenly discovered that he had something in his hands that generated a fantastic emotional return ,” reveals the designer.

Thus, in less than two years of career, Marcos Scorzelli has already accumulated a relevant resume in the market. Successful exhibitions and international prestige reinforce the purpose outlined by the designer in giving life to these animals. “My proposal is to talk to people about the relationship between the two-dimensional and the three-dimensional . All these creatures are born from a primary form , which is a circle, square and rectangle. And these forms have no welding, no seams, no loss of material. It’s a minimalist origami ,” he explains.

In addition to the exhibitions, Marcos coordinates educational and sustainable work with children through his own animals. With a piece of paper and pencil in hand, the project seeks to pique the curiosity of children, encourage interaction with the works and awaken their imagination. “Animals are very playful. Since it has a very clean and geometric shape, and is reminiscent of an animal, all children, of all ages, are encouraged to look at it, try to figure out what it looks like, imagine the reverse engineering of this piece… And this appreciation is really cool”, says the designer.

While no date has been set for the exhibition, what remains is the certainty that the creation of new art and the longing for his father, his great inspiration, will be constant. “What was a story of love and affection has become a great pleasure. And this brings my father closer to me , who is a person I miss a lot.”
