After London, Barcelona and Berlin, Amsterdam is the latest European city to have a Soho House to call its own. The exclusive London club, founded in 1995, brings together members from the design, entertainment and technology sectors. that, in its expansion plan throughout Europe, could not leave the Dutch capital out. The recently opened club brings together influences in its colors, tones and textures from the great Dutch masters Vermeer, Rembrandt and Van Gogh. And also, of course, from precious architecture of Amsterdam.
The Soho House design team moved to Amsterdam a year ago to begin their work and research. They began to live, breathe and connect with this city that has so much to offer. Little by little, they began to capture references, gathering ideas, and more than anything, understanding the Dutch way of life to translate all that into comfort for those who came to enjoy the club.
The new club is located in the Bungehuis, a former commercial building from the 1930s that was used by the University of Amsterdam from the 1970s until recently. In addition to the common areas, restaurant, bar, cinema and other amenities that every Soho House has, the Amsterdam also has 79 rooms and a rooftop pool. Many of the original interiors have been retained, especially the beautiful blue tiles, stained glass windows, marble floors and wood finishes.
If we could describe the predominant tones, it would naturally be the palette of blue, green and ochre – also very present in the art of the Dutch masters. One color worth highlighting is herengracht – a shade of green used to paint the front door of all houses. in Amsterdam – and used at Soho House to paint the ceiling of the gym.
For the selection of furniture, several were custom-made for the club, but many others were found at antique fairs and vintage markets around the city. The idea was to turn the living space into a living room where the owner of the house is a great collector of antique objects, something that deeply dialogues with the behavior studied by the design team on site . And the ultimate goal is always maximum comfort so that the user feels at ease, as if they were in their own home.
Soho House Amsterdam is at Spuistraat 210, 1012 VT.
