A 170 m² space designed as a loft for a fictional resident – a psychoanalyst in her 50s – features a “woven”
wooden panel as the visual
key-point of the decoration, proposing a sunny architecture, with a Carioca soul, with
elegant and, at the same time, unpretentious and unpretentious decoration. Signed by the trio of architects Fernanda Carminate, Luiza Baeta and Pedro Kastrup, from
PKB Arquitetura , for
CASACOR Rio 2024 , “
The power of nature is something we cannot control, but our relationship with it can .” This is the message that architects Fernanda Carminate, Luiza Baeta and Pedro Kastrup, from
PKB Arquitetura, intend to convey through
Casa Essência , at
CASACOR Rio 2024 .

Based on this profile, a home was created with the concept of “
essential and affectionate minimum ”, incorporating pieces that refer to family furniture and hand-picked production items. “The idea of not filling all the niches with production was precisely to show that
we don’t need excess, we need belonging . We don’t believe in pure and empty minimalism, but rather in the concept of
minimalism as something curated, meaningful, without fads”, explains Fernanda.
The trio also conceived the project to convey a warning for the future. “Since the theme
‘ From the present, the now ’ was announced, we have been asking ourselves: what concerns us most in the present? Environmental disasters are increasingly common and closer to all of us,” ponders Pedro Kastrup. “We, at PKB Arquitetura, use nature as our inspiration, with its textures, colors and shapes. We believe that architecture and nature are inseparable. Life and nature are inseparable. So why don’t we take care of it? Why don’t we protect it?
We believe that architecture can be a stage for these changes and questions ,” considers the architect.
Casa Essência is divided into three narratives. “As you approach the entrance, you come to the conceptual axis, with a
dark tunnel with a texture reminiscent of the earth , where the phrase ‘thinking about the past to understand the present and idealize the future’, by the Greek historian Herodotus, is highlighted,” says Luiza Baeta. At the end of this axis, the space opens up with an
organically shaped water mirror that seems to invade the room, covered in Appia Quartzite, a stained material chosen to represent mud, earth and pollution. Right next door,
Caio Marcolini 's sculpture and
Christian Cravo 's photograph from the Mariana exhibition (which portrays the memories of one of the country's greatest environmental tragedies) reinforce the
project's proposal for environmental awareness , as well as the table sculpture “A n(ovo) day”, by Monterraro Estudio, from the city of Canoas, who lost their home and studio in the floods in Rio Grande do Sul, at the beginning of the year.
The sculptures, made of wood and eggshells, symbolize their new beginning .
This
second sector represents the power of nature and its presence in everything that is made by man, as raw material. “Our inspiration comes from nature and so does our materiality. We need to be together to tell a story, to exist”, believes Baeta. “This perception extends to the
third axis, marked by an element that we call ‘hands in hand’ –
a carpentry panel made from pieces of wood with handmade joints , positioned with a braid, which refers to the union of man and nature, demarcating the bedroom area”, adds architect Fernanda Carminate.
When designing the spaces, the office emphasized the significance of the materials, such as the tile floor, a reference to
modern architecture , and the wooden floor in the bedroom, discovered during the construction and restored. Also in the bedroom, a Chipandelle cabinet is a reference to
family furniture . In the bathroom,
the curves divide the space into sectors and provide privacy . Other highlights include the Tonico sofa by Sergio Rodrigues and items from the project “O que Dizem as Águas”, a collective of artisans and producers from the mouth of the Rio Doce, also impacted by the collapse of the dam in Mariana (MG), curated by fashion designer Ronaldo Fraga.
