Last month, the English magazine TimeOut released its selection of the best cities to live in 2024, based on reports from thousands of citizens around the world. Factors taken into account included: the quality of the neighborhoods, the range of things to do – from art galleries and museums to live music – and accessibility to quality food and drink; as well as factors such as the happiness of its residents, access to green spaces and a strong community vibe. The list , which includes more than 50 classifications, ranked only one Brazilian city on the list: São Paulo, which appears in 16th position . Of its Latin American neighbors, only Mexico City (6th), Lima (25th) and Buenos Aires (32nd) appear. Check out the 10 best cities in the world to live in below:

7. Liverpool (UK)

Made famous by the Beatles and known worldwide for its intense football matches, Liverpool holds much more than just stereotypes. Home to some of the city’s best DJs at 24 Kitchen Street and rediscovering local culture in dive bars like Salt Dog Slims, Liverpool offers a wide range of nightlife options. During the day, the highlights are music events like In The Park, and cultural events are also affordable – it’s worth noting that Liverpool is the cheapest city on the list for enjoying art and culture.

6. Mexico City (Mexico)

Named the best city for culture in 2023, Mexico City is a magnet for tourists and locals alike for its rich culture, highlighted by the abundance of museums on every corner – with several art and culture venues set to open later this year. Described as beautiful and friendly by its locals, Mexico City is also at the forefront of a major culinary revolution, ranging from mushroom farming at Tencui restaurant, to Japanese coffee at Panya and even the best beef brisket at Ahumados Pelican.

5. Madrid (Spain)

Madrid ’s spectacular cuisine is celebrated around the world. World-renowned chefs flock to the Spanish capital, where the influence of its multicultural culture can be found in every neighborhood. Century-old buildings and shops coexist with new art galleries and specialty cafes – such as Carabanchel, chosen as the third best neighborhood in the world in 2023. Other international certifications that the city boasts include Salmon Guru, crowned as one of the best cocktail bars in the world; as well as David Muñoz, chef once again elected the best in the world; and the Royal Collections Gallery – one of the most important museums in Europe.

4. London (UK)

London ’s grey skies don’t scare its residents and visitors enough to leave it off this list – and many others, for that matter. The city’s plentiful pub scene and vibrant nightlife are offset by the city’s growing number of parks, galleries (most of which are free!) and the unification of the city by the underground. In the summer, crowds flock to Buckingham Palace and the Thames riverside attractions for stunning photos and a good old pint .

3. Berlin (Germany)

The nightclubs, galleries and hip vibe that have made Berlin internationally famous are just a part of why it makes it into the top 3 on this list. Bicycles, for example, are an essential part of city life and are a great way to get around the capital. The many green spaces (“infinite,” as TimeOut describes them) are true meeting points for different types of people – Tempelhof Field, a disused airport runway transformed into a huge park, is a local favorite.

2. Cape Town (South Africa)

Cape Town ’s natural beauty makes it a standout on this list. With Table Mountain perched at the heart of the peninsula, South Africa’s capital is surrounded by stunning beaches. But it doesn’t stop there: its vibrant multicultural scene makes Cape Town the second best city in the world to live in. From the District Six Museum to Robben Island, you can learn about the country’s turbulent history, while the colorful houses of Bo-Kaap invite you to discover the Cape Malay community. Studios, galleries and public events abound, and have increasingly attracted tourists to the capital.

1. New York (USA)

Restaurants, bars and shops open 24 hours a day make New York the vibrant metropolis that has become known as the “capital of the world.” And must-see exhibits are held at galleries and museums throughout the city, including MoMA, the Whitney and the American Museum of Natural History. Community-led events in each of the boroughs, such as the Queens Night Market in Flushing, the Lunar New Year Parade in Chinatown and the West Indian Day Parade in Crown Height, put the city at the top of this list.
