With a green panel at dinner, the penthouse gains a new floor during renovation

When the building in Botafogo (RJ) was still under construction, the opportunity arose to add a second floor to the penthouse. The family then decided to transform the upper floor into a private area, calling on architects Carolina Escada and Patricia Landau , from Escala Arquitetura and CASACOR Rio , to oversee the renovation of the 400 m² property . “The addition of the upper floor made it possible to remove two bathrooms, a bedroom and a closet that were planned for the lower floor. This made it possible to make the kitchen more spacious and open to the living room – a request from the husband, who loves to cook – and to create a playroom in place of the old bedroom, also integrated into the living room and the back balcony, which ended up becoming the family’s second living room,” says Patricia. According to the architects, the concept behind the downstairs project was based on connection. From the social area and the kitchen, for example, it is possible to see the playroom. Once inside the kitchen, the mirrored backsplash along the entire countertop with double sink keeps the outside view always in sight.

“The sofa guided both the layout of the room and the choice of new furniture, which needed to dialogue with it, both in terms of aesthetics and proportions,” explains Carolina. Among the designer pieces she acquired, she highlights some Brazilian creations, such as the Alice armchair (by Aristeu Pires ), the Kid armchairs (by Zanine Caldas ) and the Pistão dining table (by Arthur Casas ). As the clients wanted a cheerful house full of colorful objects, so as not to visually weigh it down or tire over time, the architects adopted white walls , designed a staircase with a very light look (made of white metalwork, with wooden steps and handrail) and punctuated it with color in the ornaments, some furniture and, in particular, the green lacquered woodwork panel , which goes from the dining area to the playroom and mimics the door leading to the children's bedrooms . “We started with tones taken from nature, such as green and blue, and complemented them with reds and oranges, like the huge rug in the living room,” concludes Patricia Landau.
