Last Tuesday, September 4th, the exhibition MAM 70: MAM and MAC USP was opened to the public! The Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo brings together works, artists and pioneering actions that marked its trajectory. Admission costs R$7 from Tuesday to Sunday, and is free on Saturdays. MAM is one of the first museums in Brazil dedicated to collecting and exhibiting modern art. Founded in 1948, it was also responsible for the creation of other cultural institutions, such as the São Paulo Biennial Foundation, the Museum of Contemporary Art of USP and the Cinemateca Brasileira. With a collection of over five thousand works produced by great names in modern and contemporary art, MAM has selected 103 pieces for this exhibition. The museum's seventieth year is celebrated with an exhibition that highlights its fundamental values and addresses global challenges of the present and future for contemporary culture, through its history. The selected works include works by Europeans Joan Miró, Fernand Léger, Jean Arp, and also by Brazilians such as Alfredo Volpi, Geraldo de Barros, Maureen Bisilliat, Nelson Leirner, Cildo Meireles, Tunga, Anna Bella Geiger, Ana Maria Tavares, Claudia Andujar, among others. The partnership between MAM and MAC USP recovers several works and documents from both collections, allowing the history of both institutions to be told through the exhibition. Themes focused on the future of society are highlighted, and the relationship between art and ecology, which permeates the identity of MAM, will be highlighted. The exhibition was organized into two parts: the Paulo Figueiredo room features works from the MAM's early period, between 1949 and 1963. The Milú Villela room, the museum's largest, features works from the MAM and MAC USP collections acquired after 1963. A timeline links the rooms and tells the history of these museums.
