After a
season in Rio de Janeiro , the exhibition
Studio Drift - Life in Things arrives at
CCBB SP where it will be on display until
August 7th . The exhibition features works by the Dutch duo
DRIFT , formed by
Lonneke Gordijn and
Ralph Nauta , which involve light, movement, nature and technology in sculptures, installations and performances. The curatorship is by
Alfons Hug and
Marcello Dantas and the São Paulo season also marks the inauguration of a new 300 m² annex to the cultural center.
One of the highlights of the exhibition is
Shylight (something like “shy light”, if translated into Portuguese). It is a
hypnotic sculpture that opens and closes , in a fascinating choreography that mimics the behavior of flowers that, at night, close in a measure of protection and saving resources. The idea is to show that, in nature, everything is in constant metamorphosis and adaptation.
During its visit to São Paulo, the exhibition also features an unprecedented exhibition of the work
Cadeira Banquete , created in partnership with
Estúdio Campana : the deconstructed piece takes the form of blocks suggesting reflections on its functionality.
Fragile Future is a multidisciplinary luminous sculpture composed of
three bronze electrical circuits connected to light-emitting dandelions . Just like nature, the sculpture adapts to space, and can grow infinitely if new circuits are added to its structure – annually, the studio collects around 15 thousand dandelion seeds during spring in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. They are individually glued to the LED lights to recreate this electric version of the flower.
The
Ego sculpture, initially designed to compose the setting for the opera Orpheus, is a time-dependent kinetic sculpture made from a
block of thin nylon fiber lines that moves through a delicate choreography . For its production, customized software was developed to enable eight motors, each with its own algorithm, to provide mobility to the block when tensioning the wires, alternating it between natural and unnatural states.
Amplitude is a kinetic installation, in which artists replicate the infinite universal movement that we find in nature, such as, for example, in sea waves. Through its continuous pulsations and the ability to reflect light in its surroundings, the work imparts a feeling of lightness. Each element of the sculpture functions as an individual that acts within its own scope, while at the same time operating as a collective.
The combination of movements is synchronized and, at times, out of step .
Also part of the exhibition are the pieces
Franchise Freedom, Coded Nature, Drifters, Dandelight and Making of DRIFT , an installation with pieces that shows a kind of “making of” the duo’s work. To create these monumental works, the artists lead a multidisciplinary team of 64 people, with a studio in Amsterdam and another in New York.
