Built in the late 14th century, the Ponte Vecchio , located in the city of Florence, Italy, is one of the greatest achievements of medieval European engineering . It connects the two opposite banks of the Arno River with its colorful buildings that house dozens of jewelry-focused businesses, and also has an upper gallery that connects the Uffizi Gallery to the Pitti Palace. After withstanding the city's major transformations, facing floods, fires and wars, it will finally undergo a more comprehensive restoration that will last for around two years, at a cost of around 2 million euros. "The magnitude of this project is historic, as the Ponte Vecchio has never undergone a restoration intervention of this technical complexity . In the end, we will have a bridge that is even more beautiful than what we are used to seeing," Florence Mayor Dario Nardella told the press.
The restoration work will involve thoroughly cleaning the bridge to remove algae, moss, lichen and weeds growing there, as well as any deposits left by chemicals in the river. Previous replacement joints will be updated, the stonework itself will be strengthened and the stone boardwalk will also be restored. Work on the upper section of the bridge will begin in October this year, while work on the lower section of the bridge will take place in the European summer of 2025 and 2026.
