On OMA’s website, Shigematsu explains, “Tiffany’s on 5th Avenue is more than a retail space, it’s a destination with a public dimension. The new addition is informed by the brand’s evolving programmatic needs—a gathering place that acts as a a contemporary counterpart to the iconic ground floor space and its activities. The floating volume over an existing terrace provides a clear visual cue for a vertical journey of diverse experiences throughout the building.” The new roof will be divided into two integrated parts. The top floor will have a glass façade that follows the original architecture's parapet with cornice. The eighth and ninth floors will form an open space, without columns, with double height ceilings and view of Central Park. The Tiffany & Co. store on 5th Avenue in New York City was built in 1940, designed by the firm Cross & Cross. The limestone facade is punctuated by large, continuous vertical windows, a landmark of modern architecture in the city. In 1980, a roof to house offices and administrative areas, with no public access. In the new project, the building will have a more harmonious vertical circulation for visitors, with no institutional areas interrupting the route to the top. The project is expected to be completed in 2022 .
