The architectural firm
The Brooklyn Studio partnered with independent artist
Steve Mayes to produce, in
LEGO , a special edition of the game with architectural landmarks from
Brooklyn , in NYC, with the aim of attracting
urban planners, architects and
lovers to this district. Brooklyn Studio is recognized for its work on
attached homes , so this project may be a shift in scale, but arguably still in line with its ability to capture the
Brooklyn streetscape through a simplified recreation. “What’s cooler than learning about 19th century urbanism? Nothing. We hope this set
inspires the next generation of architects and preservationists,” says
Christopher Devine , director of marketing at The Brooklyn Studio.
Consisting of
349 pieces , the custom LEGO set follows the geography of Brooklyn, spanning from
Carroll Gardens to
Prospect Heights. Each set comes in a custom package with step-by-step building instructions and information about the locations depicted. To add a
level of realism , the Carroll Street Bridge can be placed in its fully retracted position.
The option to produce accompanying
sound effects when raising or retracting the bridge depends solely on the person playing. The custom set was originally designed as a
Christmas gift for clients and staff at The Brooklyn Studio. But it's no surprise that the architecture firm was inundated with high demand. So now, the office plans to offer
additional sets for sale , the proceeds of which will be donated to the
Council on Historic Districts , a nonprofit dedicated to preserving neighborhoods, historic buildings, and public spaces in New York City. Information: Design Milk.
