new World Heritage Site to call our own! The
Sítio Burle Marx , located in Rio de Janeiro, received yesterday (27) the status declared by UNESCO at the 44th session of the World Heritage Committee, in China. The space is one of the most iconic landscaping works from Brazil and has more than 3,500 species of plants and pieces of South American art. The space was created by landscaper
Roberto Burle Marx in the 20th century, who invested in native species and aquatic gardens to create a space that is pure harmony. He included items from his personal collection, since for some years the place served as his residence ( between 1973 and 1994) for the master.
The site is located in Barra de Guaratiba, West Zone of Rio, and has a unique botanical collection that can be visited, as well as the former residence of the landscaper.

Burle Marx is now one of the 23 Brazilian sites declared as historical heritage by UNESCO and is moving due to its importance and also the memory of the landscaper, who used the place as a true research center to work with new species brought from abroad and see how they adapted to the Brazilian climate.

Born in São Paulo and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Roberto Burle Marx was one of the most well-known and internationally renowned names in landscaping in the 20th century. Born in 1909, the landscaper created the concept of a
modern tropical garden with a bold proposal that broke paradigms regarding the use of of tropical and subtropical plants combined with
modern architecture - which broke with the classic romantic gardens of the time. In addition to being a landscaper, he also ventured into the visual arts. He was a painter, sculptor, jewelry designer, costume designer, set designer, ceramicist and tapestry maker - and you can see all these facets on a visit to Sítio. Burle Marx passed away in 1994, but left behind a memory gardens and concepts that are used to this day.
