End of an era! The National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) announced that payphones will be removed from the streets in 2026.

However, the reason for the removal is the expiry of the concessions for fixed-line telephone service held by the five companies responsible for Brazil's payphones.

With the end of the contracts, companies are no longer required to maintain the public telephone infrastructure – except in cities where there is no cellular network available!

The process of the “disappearance” of payphones had already been taking place in recent years, dropping from 202,000 units (2020) to just 38,000 (2026).
