The search for alternatives that are less harmful to the environment has reached the textile industry, and a strong trend that has been dominating the sector is
sustainable fabrics . These fabrics are made from
organic raw materials , which are less harmful because they do not depend on the exploitation of nature to be manufactured.
Orange peel, bamboo, linen and even pineapple are some of the sustainable materials that do not use chemicals in the production of fabrics and have been gaining many followers because they can also be recycled.
In addition to being excellent for preserving the environment, eco-friendly fabrics can provide great comfort. Bamboo fiber, for example, is capable of
absorbing four times more moisture compared to other fabrics made from cotton, for example.
“One of the advantages of the weave is that it offers a porous structure, which favors the evaporation of moisture. This allows the skin to breathe better and generates thermoregulation , a factor that balances body temperature and provides a peaceful night’s sleep,” says Camila Shammah, product manager at Camesa, a brand specialized in bed, table and bath products. Even the disposal of sustainable fabrics is less harmful to the environment, since many of the materials used are
biodegradable . Below, we list the main ecological fabrics currently on the market:
Milk protein
Also called "
Qmilk ", this fabric is made using
curdled milk protein - which would otherwise be thrown away by the food industry. The fabric has a light and soft touch, reminiscent of silk, and can be used for both clothing and curtains.
Linen
Quite popular, linen is quite elegant, resistant and versatile. It requires little water to be produced and
does not use pesticides in its planting .
Food fiber
Oranges, pineapples, bananas, soybeans... these foods are certainly present in any balanced diet, but they can also be used to make many incredible and cozy fabrics. Soy fiber has an
elegant touch similar to cashmere, while orange fiber is
super flexible , can be shiny or matte, with a texture similar to silk.
Organic cotton
Although conventional cotton is a
natural fiber , its manufacturing process is often very harmful to the environment. With this in mind,
organic cotton is an alternative that uses fewer pesticides and does not consume as much water to be manufactured.
Bamboo fiber
Bamboo is dominating
sustainable constructions because it is lightweight, affordable and environmentally friendly. In the textile industry, it is also an option that provides great comfort due to its
velvety touch , perfect for duvets and other
bed and bath linens .
