Architect Miguel Pinto Guimarães , together with his MPG Arquitetura office, is leading the project for the first fully sustainable campus of the Eleva School in Recife. This is the fourth unit of the institution designed by him. In this new school headquarters, which will be inaugurated in 2022, sustainability is an element present not only in the architecture , but also in the teaching tool, thus being included in the institution's pedagogical program. “The installation of acrylic screens in sections of the ceiling and specific walls for viewing, respectively, will allow teachers and students to have direct contact with the sustainability strategies adopted and explore the debate on the topic during classes”, says MPG Architecture.

“When we address sustainability in an educational institution, we are supporting the development of students’ environmental awareness from the beginning of their education so that sustainability is not understood as an extra topic , or something complementary,” adds the firm.

According to studies, students who attend schools with more pleasant environments have greater concentration and productivity . For this new headquarters of Escola Eleva, correct levels of lighting, noise and thermal comfort were worked on so that the best conditions are offered to all students, regardless of the time of day or season.
Among the main measures adopted in this sustainable project signed by MPG Arquitetura, the following stand out:
  • Use of reservoirs to store and reuse rainwater in basins, urinals and irrigation, reducing pressure on public networks and the school's drinking water consumption.
  • Landscaping with native or adapted vegetation, promoting the recovery of flora and fauna, in addition to reducing the volumes of water required for irrigation.
  • In construction, there was a strong concern with the choice of construction materials and operating systems, seeking thermal comfort, air quality and productivity.
  • The unit also has solar panels to heat part of the water used for bathing.
