The search for sustainable solutions has driven deep transformations in architecture and civil construction. As awareness grows about the projects impacts of the sector — one of the largest CO₂ emitters and waste generators on the planet — proposals emerge that combine design, technology, and environmental responsibility. In this scenario, recycled materials stand out as a promising and inspiring alternative, pointing to a more conscious and innovative future in the way of building. By reusing waste and giving new life to discarded materials, architects, engineers, and designers not only reduce the demand for natural resources, but also reinvent the aesthetics of spaces, showing that the sustainable can — and should — be beautiful, creative, and functional.

1. Types of recycled materials used


The use of recycled materials in construction is not a passing trend, but a silent revolution underway. Currently, it is possible to find a variety of reused inputs, with applications ranging from structure to decoration.

Recycled concrete

Originating from the crushing of demolition waste, recycled concrete can be reused as aggregate in new structures. In addition to reducing the volume of debris, it avoids the extraction of sand and gravel.

Salvaged wood

Wood recovered from old constructions gains new life in floors, panels, furniture, and coverings. Each piece carries stories and unique textures, adding charm and authenticity to the projects.

Recycled plastic

Transformed into blocks, tiles, panels, or urban furniture, recycled plastic is lightweight, durable, and versatile. In some solutions, it can even replace conventional concrete, with less environmental impact.

Recycled glass

Glass shards are reused in coverings, countertops, and even translucent structural blocks. Besides the visual appeal, the material contributes to the reduction of industrial waste.

Tire rubber

Used tires are transformed into insulating mats, rubberized floors, or as an additive in the manufacture of eco-friendly asphalt. An ingenious solution for one of the most problematic wastes of the modern world.

Recycled textiles

Discard fabrics from the fashion and garment industry can be transformed into thermal or acoustic blankets, and also serve as raw material in creating furniture and coverings.

The adoption of recycled materials in construction brings environmental, social, and even economic benefits. However, like any innovation, it also imposes challenges that need to be faced creatively and with planning.

Advantages
  • Reduction of environmental impacts: The reuse of materials prevents disposal in landfills and reduces the extraction of natural resources.

  • Resource savings: In many cases, the use of recycled materials represents savings in construction costs.

  • Unique aesthetics: Reused materials add originality, texture, and memory to spaces.

  • Promotion of the circular economy: Stimulates sustainable production chains, job creation, and innovation.

  • Creation of awareness: Projects incorporating recycled materials inspire other professionals and promote a new perspective on waste.

Challenges
  • Lack of specific regulations: Many materials still lack clear regulations for large-scale use.

  • Logistics and sorting: Collecting, separating, and preparing recycled materials can be more complex than using conventional ones.

  • Cultural resistance: There is still prejudice regarding the aesthetics or quality of recycled materials.

  • Standardization and quality control: Ensuring safety and durability requires specific techniques and constant monitoring.

Overcoming these obstacles depends on collaboration among professionals, industry, public policies, and consumers. The more one experiments, the more one learns and advances.

Grand Ring, by Sou Fujimoto


Designed to emphasize the sense of unity, the Expo Osaka inaugurates the largest wooden architectural structure in the world, titled "Grand Ring". The construction is inspired by an ancient Japanese temple and structured by enormous trusses with an area of over 61,000 m².

House of Monkeys, by Marko Brajovic


On a wooded lot in Paraty, the House of Monkeys was designed to integrate with the forest, featuring a interwoven wooden structure and covering in galvalume with thermal and acoustic insulation. Compact, it occupies only 5m x 6m and offers 54 m² of internal area and 32 m² of covered area. It is distributed into a kitchen, a bath, two flexible bedrooms, and terraces that ensure cross ventilation and coexistence with nature.
