The egg , one of the most versatile and accessible items in Brazilian food culture, is the protagonist of the new pieces created by the design studio Monterraro . Entitled “Casca”, the new collection plays with the “ state of being ” of the egg and proposes another purpose for waste from food companies in Rio Grande do Sul, where the office is located.

The idea is to use design as a tool to reintroduce the shell into the logic of consumption . It is born from a serious provocation, but with a light approach. “We had already decided to create a piece that harmoniously combined wood with another material. But it couldn’t be just any material, it had to be something really unusual , something that would bring a challenge to the game,” says designer and partner at Monterraro, Antonio Garcia .

“Eggs are the animal protein that Brazilians consume the most, and for several reasons. And we like to highlight this in this collection, because it tells the story of a subject that is in every Brazilian’s home ,” says Pâmela Oliveira , journalist and partner at Monterraro.

To give you an idea, based on data from the Annual Report of the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA) – 2022 edition, referring to the year 2021 –, the Gema table lamp, from the new collection, is made with 480 eggshells , and this is the amount of eggs that a Brazilian consumes in 682 days . In other words, the fate given to the bark here in the country leaves much to be desired. And it is around this question and data that the Casca collection was born for the Monterraro design studio.
