Arup -- an independent company of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists offering a wide range of professional services -- has developed a 3D printing method to create sophisticatedly designed steel parts that are true works of art. The aim is to significantly reduce the time and cost of producing parts like this, which are complex and release a lot of carbon in their manufacture.

"Using this method, we can create batches of individual decorative pieces much more efficiently. This has tremendous implications for reducing production costs and waste. But most importantly, this approach allows for sophisticated design without the need to simplify the project with lower costs", comments Salomé Galjaard, the leader of the Arup team.

WithinLab (an engineering design and consulting software), CRDM/3D Systems (the Additive Manufacturing partner) and EOS, which worked on the initial development of the printing, participated in this technological process.
