Never have we stayed indoors as much as we have during this time of isolation: the pandemic made us look inside the home and many people ended up starting to grow more
plants for their apartments as a way of bringing a little of the outside world into their daily lives - combined with desire that many already had to have more contact with nature. And the benefits are many: whether as a hobby, to improve air quality, give your decor a new look, create a spice garden or even help with mental health,
bringing more green to your interiors adds up to different types of benefits . However, adopting the
Urban Jungle at home may not be an easy task for first-time planters:
choosing ideal species, caring correctly and selecting suitable locations are just some of the items that need to be paid attention to so that the plants grow healthy. . For those who intend to create a small private jungle inside the apartment (or for those who have already started the task, but are encountering difficulties), architect
Beatriz Quinelato teaches the main points step-by-step below. And the tips come from an expert: for her project
"Listen to the Green", part of the Windows CASACOR Challenge , Beatriz created a garden inside a container full of tropical species in the middle of Marginal in São Paulo.

Is it possible to have plants in the bathroom or kitchen?
Yes! There are even
plants for apartments that go really well in the bathroom, due to the fact that they have natural lighting and adequate humidity, such as camedórea, money-in-penca, imbé, zamioculca (fortune plant), maranta. If you have a window in the kitchen, you can invest without fear too.
Air conditioning hinders plant growth?
As the environment becomes drier, there are plants that suffer a little more from air conditioning. But if the device is not turned on directly and we choose suitable plants, there is no problem. Some species that are more tolerant of air-conditioned environments are the boa constrictor, pacová, pau d'água, sword-of-São-Jorge and spear-of-São-Jorge.
Are cacti and succulents easier to get right?
Yes! They are easier, as they need less watering and almost never pruning. But you need to be careful, because if you water constantly, the plant could drown.

What are the basic precautions to keep plants alive?
Proper watering is the main care. In fact, watering too much is a very common mistake and this can kill the plant, cause root fungus, etc. Fertilizers and insecticides are only necessary if the plant shows signs of pests or diseases. And in this case, I recommend consulting someone specialized for a correct indication of which type of fertilizer or insecticide to use. Nowadays, some specialized stores have people who can assist with these recommendations.
Where to grow the plants?
They can be grown in pots, planters, hanging pots,
vertical gardens , kokedama, in decorative pots with some cut foliage that lives in water. There are several options.

Any special care for those with children or pets?
It is best to find out at the time of purchase whether the plant is poisonous.
Do we need to have some kind of “garden kit” at home?
You don't need anything very specific. With a watering can and pruning shears, you're great to start with. And over time, if the plant starts to show signs of lack of fertilizer, pests or diseases, the best thing to do is seek specific help and follow the instructions.
