The
Elephant's Foot is a well-known plant species characterized by its unique trunk, which serves the function of storing water. This is due to the fact that it is a
plant native to the Mexican desert , where it must withstand long periods of time. of drought. With an exotic beauty, it is increasingly becoming one of the favorite species of Brazilians, since
it can be grown indoors and does not require much maintenance . In the 2021 edition of
CASACOR São Paulo , landscaper
Luciano Zanardo , head of the office that bears his name, designed an exclusive space to exhibit
15 specimens of Elephant's Foot in its environment , named
Alameda das Artes . “In addition to being a resistant and easy-to-maintain species, it is
extremely sculptural , contributing to the beautification of any environment”, says Luciano. Despite having these characteristics,
some care needs to be taken to ensure that indoor cultivation is effective. For example, it is a species that can be cared for in partial shade, with moderate irrigation.
Below, the landscaper listed some other tips important. Check it out! Planting in pots
The Elephant's Foot can be planted in pots , especially in residential environments, where there is often no available land space for its growth. Regarding exposure to the sun, it is recommended that it be placed in a place with
indirect light , like half shadow. “I like to use pots with larger diameters, since
the base of the species is very wide and needs space to develop ,” says the landscaper. “Among them, we can choose between the Vietnamese pot, the polyethylene pot and the cement pot. polished wire, which are very resistant”, he adds. Another important tip is the
need for holes so that there is no accumulation of water, which in turn can harm the survival of the species.
General care
As they are part of the xerophyte group – adapted to live in semi-arid and desert climates –, the Elephant's Foot requires
moderate irrigation , as it prefers drier to moister soil. Its base, responsible for storing water, contributes to this issue. “For those who are fans of the
urban jungle , but don’t have much time to take care of their plants, this species is one of the ones I recommend the most, precisely because
it doesn’t require daily watering ,” he explains. Furthermore, there is no need to worry about pruning and fertilization can be carried out just every two months.
