Induced photosynthesis maintains the beauty of the Atlantic Forest at CASACOR SP

Showcasing healthy and inspiring environments is always one of the priorities of the architects on the CASACOR team, and this year was no different. With the support of technology , some projects stood out for presenting landscaping innovations that allow the creation of a more sustainable and preservation space - even in Conjunto Nacional, a largely closed space that hosts CASACOR São Paulo 2023 . Not everyone has the privilege of being able to visit the Atlantic Forest – one of the regions with the greatest biodiversity on the planet. The good news is that whoever visits the São Paulo exhibition you can get a preview of the biome that characterizes much of the country through the project designed by architect Sig Bergamin . To achieve this, the veteran partnered with Timóteo Paisagismo to create Ciclos Deca , a memorable and inspiring space whose abundance of plants is present even in the aroma of the environment, which completes the immersion in the tropical forest. "There were exactly 3,360 plants of different species, all Brazilian, in a closed environment where we knew thousands of people would pass by and they needed to appreciate our work", explains Aline Timóteo, in charge of the office. The plants are all native and, to choose them, Timóteo counted on the guidance of an agronomist, who helped throughout the process of choosing and identifying which species would bring harmony and hospitality to the project – essential premises for the architect in the construction of the environment. Another example of sustainable landscaping was represented by the garden designed by the duo Alessandra Caiado Cardim and Ricardo Cardim , which aimed to bring a balance of species and create an invigorating and purifying space. "It's a project that works on Brazilianness, valuing our culture, our beauty and biodiversity, which is the largest in the world", says Ricardo Cardim. They focused on bringing species present both in the Atlantic Forest and also others that were abundant in São Paulo before the urbanization process . "From a scientific point of view, these species are the best options , as they will have better adaptation to the climate, feed the fauna, in addition to helping to enhance the cultural identity of that territory . Native plants are timeless", concludes Cardim.

Photosynthesis in a closed space?

Those passionate about science should remember that, for plants to produce their own food, exposure to sunlight is necessary – in addition to water and mineral salts from the earth. But when the plants are in an enclosed space, like Conjunto Nacional, without any glimpse of natural light in sight , how can this happen? Timóteo brought an innovation to Ciclos Deca: an innovative mobile light supplementation system developed by a group of architects and designers from Flora Vital, a technology and design company, so that plants receive enough energy to carry out photosynthesis and survive long periods in closed environments . "In this way, gardens like this can remain green and alive for longer, while the replacement of species ends up being minimal, avoiding waste and constant maintenance ", explains Aline.

Lamps of varying spectrums were used, as well as ballasts and corrugated hyperbolic reflectors so that the luminous temperatures are close to those emitted by the sun, taking care to maintain the correct distance and exposure time, so that they receive the appropriate amount of illumination. Aline said that the detachable lamps were created especially for the Deca project , so that the process could only be carried out at night, when the exhibition is closed to the public. "Without the need for equipment fixed to the ceiling that could interfere with the architecture of the environment, the space becomes free for the inspiration of its creators", he adds. Cardim Arquitetura Paisagística's Forest Bath also featured technology capable of reproducing sunlight and bringing the energy necessary for plant photosynthesis. "We noticed a very cool result, as many trees that arrived here lost their leaves because they were within the National Complex, and now with this period of light they are all re-sprouting and becoming healthy and beautiful again", he explains.
