The Ficus Lyrata, popularly known as the "Fig Tree" or "Ficus violin leaf", is an ornamental plant that has become one of the most beloved species for decorating indoor environments. With its large, showy leaves, it can transform any room, bringing a touch of freshness and sophistication, as well as being an excellent air-cleaning purifier.

Native to the tropical forests of West Africa, it belongs to the Moraceae family and is known mainly for its striking appearance, with large, shiny leaves that resemble the shape of a violin. Although it is mainly found as an indoor plant, the Ficus Lyrata can grow quite large when cultivated in its natural environment, reaching up to 3 meters in height.

But those who want to grow it indoors don't have to worry about the ceiling height. When planted in pots, Ficus tends to be more compact, which makes it ideal for decoration.

Choosing a location: Ficus lyrata is a plant that loves light, but does not tolerate direct sun for long periods. The ideal is to place it in indirect light, such as near a window with light curtains or in a well-lit area, but without direct exposure to the sun. Temperature and humidity: The species prefers mild temperatures, between 18°C and 24°C. It also appreciates an environment with good humidity, so it's important to keep it away from intense heat sources to prevent it from drying out. Soil: This plant needs well-drained, light soil. A good option is to use a mixture of potting soil with perlite or sand to ensure that water doesn't accumulate in the roots, which can cause rotting. Pot: To grow Ficus Lyrata, choose pots that offer enough space for the plant to grow - to the extent you want. If it is grown in a small pot, the roots may become compressed and the plant's development may be reduced.

Necessary Care

The Ficus Lyrata, despite being a hardy plant, requires some care to stay healthy and lush. Watering should be moderate, without soaking or drying out the soil. During the warmer months, the ideal is to increase the frequency of watering, and in winter decrease it. To keep the Ficus with a beautiful shape and control its size, it is important to do regular pruning: in late winter or early spring, when the plant's growth is slower. Remove dried or damaged leaves and, if necessary, cut back the longest branches to promote a more compact appearance. One of the great beauties of the species is its large, smooth leaves, which need specific care to prevent the accumulation of dust. Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth from time to time, or use a spray bottle with warm water.
