A bromeliad is a plant from the Bromeliaceae family, which includes around 3,000 different species. They are typical of tropical countries and can be found from Mexico to Argentina, being very common in humid forests. When it comes to beauty, they leave nothing to be desired. Their spiral leaves form a kind of rosette - which is also excellent for storing water.

Bromeliads can be grown in different spaces, and are suitable for those who are just starting out, as their care is relatively simple. Here are the main ones:
  1. Indirect lighting: bromeliads don't like direct exposure to the sun, as their leaves can burn. Leave it in a place where it receives mainly sunlight.
  2. Frequent watering: As it is a tropical plant, it is important to water frequently, but without soaking the soil. In addition, the rosette formed by the leaves should be kept with a little water, as the plant also uses it for food. Change the water in the rosette weekly to avoid the accumulation of dirt and insects.
  3. Temperature and humidity: Bromeliads prefer warm, humid environments. Therefore, avoid very dry places and protect the plant from intense cold.

Planting bromeliads at home is a great option for those who want to bring more color and life into their environment. To do this, choose a suitable location, such as an indoor garden or near a window with indirect light. Especially for indoor environments, planting can be done in a pot. It's important to choose a model with good drainage and that has holes in the bottom to avoid the accumulation of water. A smart tip is to leave the base of the rosette slightly above soil level. This ensures that the bromeliads grow longer and healthier. Another essential precaution is to protect the plant from pests such as bugs and aphids. In addition, fungi can appear if the humidity is not controlled correctly. To avoid this problem, it's worth creating a routine of inspecting the leaves and the base of the rosette. If you spot any pests, use a natural insecticide, such as a solution of neutral soap and water. It is also essential to prune regularly to remove dry or damaged leaves to prevent the spread of disease and keep the plant healthy.

Designed to highlight the importance of pollination, the project by landscape designer Luciano Zanardo features the sculpture Insects, by artist Leopoldo Martins from Minas Gerais. The vegetation includes native and exotic tropical species, such as bromeliads and alocasias - Burle Marx's favorites. The proposal was to choose fragrant and brightly colored plants in order to attract the agents responsible for carrying pollen from one flower to another, an essential activity for the preservation of nature. Another strong point of the space is the palette of vibrant tones, such as the blue applied to the walls. (Jp Image/CASACOR)

Growing bromeliads in a pot is an option for those who want to bring this tropical plant indoors. Here's a step-by-step guide and the main precautions for keeping the species beautiful:
  1. Choose a suitable pot: The pot should be large enough to accommodate the bromeliad's roots, at least 3 to 4 centimeters larger than the size of the plant; it should also ensure good drainage.
  2. Potting substrate: The substrate should be light, loose and well-drained. Mixtures of soil for orchids or succulents work well. If the plant is large, you can add a little pine bark to improve drainage.
  3. Positioning the pot: Place the pot in a spot where the plant receives indirect light. If it is indoors, avoid places with air conditioning or heaters directly above the plant, as these can dry out the environment and harm the bromeliad's development.
