360 m² area features a garden with tropical landscaping and lots of flowers

The couple with two teenage children already lived in this house in Barra da Tijuca, but wanted the home to be modernized – including the generous 360 m² outdoor area. For this, landscape architect Maira Duarte, from the Horto Girassol office, came into the picture – Maira signed the Vibra Alma space at CASACOR Rio 2023 , in addition to providing plants for the other areas of the exhibition. “Overall, the clients asked for low landscaping to let natural light into the home, be visually light and filled with flowers,” she says. Originally, the landscaping was very tall, bulky and old, leaving the house dark, hidden and without personality. The idea then was to design low gardens, not only to solve the lighting issue but also to allow the facade and the internal area to communicate better. “ We use a variety of green species that bloom in different seasons, so that the garden remains in bloom all year round . We also created vertical gardens in the passage areas and facing the windows of the house, reinforcing the residents’ feeling of warmth and connection with nature”, reveals Maira.

As the main idea of the project was to work with many species that bloom throughout the year, the landscaper used different types of Alpinias and Heliconias . “The plant that stands out the most is the glorious philodendron , a species of great beauty and velvety touch, still little used by landscapers,” she says. The house's landscaping also has an automatic irrigation system, activated by an app via Bluetooth , which allows you to control the amount of water according to the species, sunshine and seasons. “This technology is extremely important, especially in the case of vertical gardens, as it gives residents complete freedom to travel for as long as they want”, points out Maira.
