After 27 years without shows, the classic
Teatro Copacabana Palace , located inside one of the most beloved hotels in Rio de Janeiro and all of Brazil, the
Belmond , will be reopened in November of this year, and already has a schedule of shows that will begin in December with the presentation: "
Copacabana Palace - The Musical ".
The play that marks the space's return will tell the story of the hotel, with its most emblematic moments, taking the audience to rediscover and navigate through the Belmond timeline. The direction was by Gustavo Wabner and Sergio Módena, with text by authors and producers Ana Velloso and Vera Novello and journalist and writer Luis Erlanger. The executive and artistic production is in charge of Sábios Projetos. "After exceptional work by the entire team involved in the renovation of the Copacabana Palace Theater, we are very happy to announce the reopening of this
true cultural heritage site of the city . It will be a gift for future generations and we look forward to sharing unforgettable moments with the public," says Ulisses Marreiros, General Manager of the Copacabana Palace. The revitalization of the Theater was carried out by
Ivan Rezende , who rescued the history of the hotel in the decorative elements with a more contemporary aspect, harmonizing shapes, textures, colors and feelings. "The feeling is that the theater, in addition to being rejuvenated in its historic areas, listed as historical heritage, has gained in grandeur with the
new architectural perspectives ," says Ivan.
Opened in 1949, the theater located inside one of the most sophisticated hotels in Rio de Janeiro, in Copacabana, received great names in Brazilian drama, such as Fernanda Montenegro, Paulo Autran, Tônia Carrero, Renata Sorrah and Marieta Severo.
The theater was a true Brazilian jewel , and its stages have been filled by large and renowned theater companies from all over Brazil, among them Abílio Pereira de Almeida, Fernando de Barros Company, United Artists Company, National Drama Company, Brazilian Comedy Theater, Maria Della Costa Company, and Teatro dos Sete. In 1953, a major fire hit the space, which was restored the following year and reopened with the play "Diálogos das Carmelitas". In 1994, the theater closed its doors, the same year it
hosted the play "Desejo", starring Vera Fischer. The plan to reopen the iconic theater began in 2018.
