The color of the year 2021 couldn't be like the others. In an unimaginable moment, with people in social isolation, the home became a permanent environment, a safe haven. With this in mind, ColourFutures - AkzoNobel's global study of color trends and behavior - designed Pedra Esculpida, a shade that inspires a more peaceful future. “The color Carved Stone connects us back to nature and simple things. A warm, natural neutral tone, it allows other shades to shine and provides a solid foundation for living. It is a strong, earthy color, which evokes stability, growth and potential, helping to create an environment and give the courage necessary to embrace the changes that are coming”, says Fernanda Figueiredo, Communications and Color Design manager at Tintas AkzoNobel Decoratives in South America. Regarding decoration, Fernanda explains that “Natural tones work easily in a home by creating a warm, neutral canvas that allows other colors to come to the fore. It provides a vigorous foundation for any environment, as they work so well together, the selected shades give us the possibility to be creative with colors and also complementary geometric shapes.” 
For AkzoNobel Global Aesthetics Center creative director Heleen Van Gent, the 2021 color palette was a challenge. “We all face experiences that feel disconnected from the modern world. But we also discovered something much more positive: solidarity between people who don't know each other and the fact that, together, we can do extraordinary things. Now is the time to find the courage to stand up and move forward. Our home continues to be our sanctuary, the perfect place for us to readapt, renew ourselves and recharge our energy. Thus, our Color of the Year is a hue that speaks about balance, stability and potential.” Carved Stone is a versatile color, which changes tone depending on the time of day and the other colors that accompany it. It is a solid and neutral base on which other tones can rest and highlight their nuances, creating diverse design possibilities. Using Carved Stone, four palettes were created, each with a different perspective on current trends. Trend 1: Self-confidence 
This palette was inspired by the people who made the transformation and defended what they believed in with passion, empathy and energy. The highlight is the female leaders who have become the most effective and prominent in the fight against coronavirus. 
Expressive colors: Strong tones awaken and stimulate authenticity. Positive, energizing and surprising, they can increase creativity and free thinking, allowing people to set an environment in which they can truly express their personality and reinforce their sense of self. The warm base tone of Carved Stone brings these tones together to provide an integrated and balanced feeling to any space. Sumptuous, but not exaggerated, are colors that encourage creativity everywhere, such as: Tibetan Bronze, Bluff Red, Henna Red, Dancing Tea, Romantic Gift, Modern Luxury, Lavender Field, Doll Dress and Intense Cherry. Trend 2: Social solidarity 
Colors to join: Clay, peat, chalk, clay. These tones reflect people from all over the world and carry with them the idea of communion. Neutral grays and browns combine easily with natural materials such as copper and ceramic and convey balance. These are colors capable of softening the harshest lines of a contemporary environment and bringing a feeling of warmth and intimacy: Silver Feather, Confectionary Almond, Century Brown, Fossil Grey, White Bucks, Baroque Theater, Havana Brown, Slate Brown and Gray Sky. Trend 3: Reevaluate the past 
It's time for reflection and self-criticism. Every day it becomes clear that we need to value the future by recognizing the past. Tomorrow is only possible by revisiting consumption patterns, overcoming fads and valuing ancestral roots, even if society is short-term. Therefore, environments must embrace traditions and have timeless styles, which tell stories of generations. 
Timeless colors: this palette is a mix of tradition and contemporary. Inspiring shades of yellows and ochres, balanced with neutrals and the Color of the Year, can help create a classic contemporary backdrop that will work with any furniture combination without aging. Alone or in creative combinations, these colors warm and energize, without overloading. They are: Emperor's View, Cappuccino, Monarch Gold, Creme Brulée, Spider's Web, Winter Silence, String White, European White and Soft Copper. Trend 4: Environmental awareness 
More than ever, it is essential to urgently reduce our impact on the planet, as well as finding ways to do things in different and more sustainable ways. The present moment leads us to reconsider our relationship with the world in general: what really matters, what we need. Making small changes in the way you do is an important step toward creating a positive legacy for the next generation. And our home plays a central role in this scenario. People have been looking for ways to bring nature into their homes. The search for spaces with simplicity, reuse and repairs, environmental responsibility and tradition gave rise to the Colors of the Planet palette. 
Colors of the planet: the tones of the natural world – the sea and sky, the grass and trees, the soil – are echoed in the blues, greens and browns of this selection. These colors can bring a sense of calm and rebalance to a space and, in harmony with Carved Stone and natural materials, help create the beginning of a simpler way of living.
