This year,
ICFF NYC , the international contemporary furniture fair, will award the prestigious
Designer of the Year award to
Morris Adjmi , founder and director of the multidisciplinary studio of the same name. According to the fair's organizers,
Morris Adjmi is dedicated to understanding
history and the
complex forces that shape cities to create buildings that are contextual yet unmistakably contemporary.
Adjmi's passion for contextual
architecture was formed by the cast-iron balconies of the French Quarter and the dilapidated houses of his native New Orleans, and was refined in
New York and
Milan during his
13-year collaboration with Pritzker Prize-winning architect
Aldo Rossi .
Morris established his design office in
1997 following his collaboration with Rossi, and from this solid foundation has built a
multidisciplinary design practice known for its thoughtful engagement with history, distinctive interpretation of industrial forms, and creative expression of
innovative materials .
Notable projects include
The Grand Mulberry , located at the intersection of Grand and Mulberry Streets in NYC's Little Italy. The design is inspired by the rich heritage of
historic Italianate tenements found throughout the neighborhood. And
The WELCOME Sign, a sign that shines like a beacon of hospitality over the
New York City waterfront.
