It is with deep sadness that the world of art and design says goodbye to one of its greatest, brightest and most innovative exponents, Gaetano Pesce , who passed away in the early hours of April 4, 2024, at the age of 84. His departure leaves an immeasurable gap in the global creative community, but his legacy will endure as an eternal inspiration for future generations. Born in 1939 in La Spezia, Italy, Gaetano Pesce was deeply influenced by family origins in Venice and Florence, places that inspired his artistic journey. In Venice, I absorbed a rich understanding of colors, since Venetian art is made of light and color, while in Florence, I learned to value the importance of drawing without colors, and that is more or less my identity. - Pesce, 2021

Graduated in architecture from the University of Venice, Pesce was creative and always in search of new things, leaving an indelible mark on the contemporary cultural landscape, redefining design paradigms with his boundless wit and imagination. His iconic creations, such as the Up series , are testaments to his creative genius, challenging modernist notions of functionality and aesthetics beyond the well-crafted concept.
Launched in 1969, the iconic Up 5 armchair , also known as Mama or Donna , not only marked a significant moment in the world of design, but also became a symbol against traditional oppressions imposed on women . Built with expanded polyurethane, it was first compacted under pressure, which aided in storage and transportation, and self-inflated when it came into contact with air, adopting a shape that echoed the curves of the female body but held in place by a ball that resembles the balls of a woman. prisoner irons . This was the condition of women, for a long time, for centuries, until today, because in many countries women suffer from a lack of freedom, which is a big mistake. And this armchair was a tribute to this type of problem . - Pesce, 2021 In addition to his innovative contributions to the world of furniture design and fine arts, Gaetano Pesce also left a lasting legacy in architecture . Visionary projects, like the Organic Building in Osaka , designed in 1989, are monumental testaments to his ability to transform spaces in a more eccentric and fun way.
