There are those who doubt it, but creating a
gallery of paintings on the wall can be more difficult than it seems. This is because
very common mistakes are often made when creating decoration, such as hanging the painting too high, placing art that is too small in relation to the furniture, or even not assembling the composition correctly. For
Mauricio Arruda , architect and designer at Todos Arquitetura, “using paintings in decoration is in the top five of things that
change the look of a house without spending a lot ”. See below the tips to never go wrong in the
gallery of paintings that the architect separated for Urban Arts!
1. Living room
At home, one of the most important places to place pictures is above the sofa. In this traditional area of decoration,
it is necessary to pay attention to the volume of the furniture, which requires complementary decoration . “Here we have the perfect example for the two-thirds rule. For a sofa measuring more or less two and ten meters, the composition should occupy a maximum of one and twenty meters, for example”, says Arruda.
According to him,
the arrangement of two thirds can be triangular , when larger pictures are placed side by side and aligned at the bottom, while the smaller one is placed above them, forming an imaginary triangle. However, here's a valuable tip: you must always remember that the composition should be
approximately 25 centimeters above the backrest .
“Not every composition needs to be aligned with the center of the furniture. It is possible to insert other elements as parts of the formation, simply
by balancing the opposite side of the volume with a pair of frames with different sizes , for example. A balanced composition can be symmetrical when there are two frames of the same size, or asymmetrical, when frames of different sizes are used that balance each other”, explains the architect. For him,
the more you vary the size and format of the paintings on the wall, the more dynamic the gallery becomes .

Most of the time, the elevator hall and the bathroom tend to be small spaces that are difficult to decorate. The desire to hang a work of art can generate many
doubts about size and quantity . “The tip for this environment is to always hang art that has
details to be seen up close ,” says Arruda.
But the architect warns: if the idea is to create a composition of paintings,
the distance between them should not be too large , being restricted to between 5 and 10 centimeters. “In small spaces we can also have a gallery. Make a
composition of vertical frames . If they are more or less the same size, the middle frame is centered at one and a half meters from the floor. I like to surprise with the scale of decorative objects and
use larger paintings even in small environments ”, says the architect.
3. Hallway
(Eduardo Camara / CASACOR)
Just like the hall and the bathroom, the hallway can be an environment that generates many doubts about what type of work of art to use. For Mauricio Arruda, this type of space is
ideal for creating linear galleries from horizontally aligned paintings. “I like to align paintings from below, positioning others on
top to create a kind of visual triangle ." This composition tip is
perfect for those with higher ceilings, or even double ceilings .
4. Rooms
Behind the bed, the rules are the same as for the sofa. As it is an object with a large volume, the bed demands that,
if only one piece is used, it must occupy at least two thirds of the width of the headboard . A composition with two paintings or a trio of the same size can occupy almost the same size as the headboard.
“If the room does not have sconces or pendants,
the paintings can be positioned on the bedside tables and leave the area above the bed free , and can be a symmetrical or asymmetrical composition”, adds Arruda.
