After visits to Europe and North America and a debut season in Salvador, which had to be extended due to public success, the immersive exhibition
“Frida Kahlo: An Immersive Biography” opens in São Paulo on February 1st. It is the largest immersive exhibition ever created around the life and work of Mexican Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón, known as Frida Kahlo (1907-1954). Through collections of historical photographs, original films, digital environments, art installations, items of collector and original music, the public is invited to dive into the most relevant moments in the life of the Mexican artist and the values and ideals that make her work reverberate to this day.
Within a space specially built in an area of 2,000 m², in about 90 minutes the visitor will be able to visit different spaces that symbolize and recreate important facts of the artist's life such as “
The Instant ”, a hologram that reproduces the tram accident that marked your life forever with irreversible consequences. Another highlight will be “
The Dream ,” an installation that attempts to reproduce Frida’s imagination and feelings during her recovery in bed, the place where she created most of her works. The art references the artist’s life cycle, birth and death, health and illness.
The highlight is the main hall, a sensory journey through 1,000 m² of projectable screens through the “
Frida Universe ”, where the spectator merges with the works while surrendering to the profusion of colors and movement. In another hall, the public You will come into contact with images from the painter's childhood and adolescence, understanding the historical and biographical context that shaped the personality of the woman who became a global icon. Interactivity will also be present in the “
Cadrave Exquis ” experience, in virtual reality, inspired by Frida’s works and which explore her particular imagination. Another attraction is the “
Photo Booth”, with technology capable of identifying faces and, based on their characteristics, of each one, create unique portraits, using collage techniques.
Originally created in Spain by the Frida Kahlo Corporation and the company Layers of Reality, the exhibition is held in Brazil in partnership with the North American company Primo Entertainment.
Who was Frida Kahlo?
Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) was one of the most important Mexican painters, known for her surrealist-inspired self-portraits and also for her photographs. Her work gained enormous notoriety and was acclaimed worldwide as one of the richest artistic expressions of Latin America.
Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón was born in the town of Coyoacán, Mexico, on July 6, 1907, to a German father and a Spanish mother. She suffered from poor health from an early age. At the age of six, she contracted polio, which left a scar on her foot. . At the age of 18, she suffered a serious bus accident that left her in the hospital for a long time. Despite being depressed and unable to walk, Frida began to paint her image, with a mirror hanging in front of her and an easel adapted so she could paint lying down. Her first painting was “Self-Portrait in a Velvet Dress”, dedicated to
Alejandro Gómez Arias , her ex-fiancé.
Recovered, Frida began studying drawing and modeling at the National Preparatory School of the Federal District of Mexico. In 1928, she joined the Mexican Communist Party, where she met
Diego Rivera , an important painter of “
Mexican Muralism ”. In 1929, at the age of 22 , Frida Kahlo marries Diego Rivera and they go to live in the “
Blue House ”, where Frida was born. In 1930, Frida became pregnant but suffered a miscarriage. That same year, she went with her husband to the United States, where he held exhibitions. Another miscarriage led her to paint a large number of self-portraits. In 1934, the couple returned to Mexico. and Frida suffers another miscarriage. At this time, the toes on her right foot are amputated. Three years later, Frida meets
Leon Trotsky , who has taken refuge in her house in Coyoacán, Mexico, along with his wife Natalia Sedova.
In 1939, Frida exhibited her work with great success in New York and Paris. At this time, she came into contact with
Pablo Picasso and
Wassily Kandinsky . The Louvre Museum acquired one of her self-portraits. Frida Kahlo was also fond of photography, a habit that inherited from her father and maternal grandfather, both professional photographers. She taught art at the National School of Painting and Sculpture, recently founded in Mexico City. She was an advocate for women's rights, becoming a symbol of feminism. Depressed, she lived the last years of her life in the Casa Azul, in Mexico, which in 1958 became home to a museum in honor of the painter. Frida Kahlo died in Coyoacán, Mexico, on July 13, 1954, and her work, 143 paintings, 55 of which are self-portraits, have spread throughout the world, and she is currently one of the most acclaimed Latin American artists in the world.
