Lina Bo Bardi is the first Brazilian architect to receive the Golden Lion

The recognition rewards the architect for her career and her body of work at the 17th Biennale di Venezia

Italian architect naturalized Brazilian, Lina Bo Bardi will receive – in memoriam – the Special Golden Lion for her career and body of work during the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia. Lina is the first Brazilian woman to win a Golden Lion . She is also the first in the world with a built work and the third Brazilian to be honored with the award – before her, Oscar Niemeyer and Paulo Mendes da Rocha received the nominations in 1996 and 2016, respectively. The appointment, which took place this Monday, March 8, was made by architect Hashim Sarkis , curator of Biennale Architettura 2021. For him, the architect is the one who best represents the theme of this year's event : "How will we live together?" (How will we live together?).

This edition of the Biennale Architettura will be presented in April in digital format and broadcast live on the La Biennale website and social media, with the opening to the public scheduled for May 22, 2021. In Brazil, the celebration is initially scheduled for July of this year and will follow all health and government protocols. “This is a very important moment as we celebrate the 70th anniversary of Casa de Vidro , the first project built by Lina, where the Institute. We are planning a group exhibition on architecture in the garden of the Glass House, following the theme of the Biennale, as well as the launch of a new website that will make the Bardi couple's collection more accessible to the world”, details Sol Camacho.
