About the Jô Clemente Institute (IJC)
The Jô Clemente Institute (IJC) is a non-profit civil society organization that has been promoting health and quality of life for people with intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and rare diseases for over 62 years, in addition to supporting their social inclusion and the defense of rights, disseminating knowledge through scientific research. With pioneering and innovation as its premises, it promotes the development of skills and potential that favor education and supported employment, in addition to offering legal advice to families on the rights of people with intellectual disabilities. A pioneer in the Newborn Screening Test in Brazil and accredited by the Ministry of Health as a Reference Service for Neonatal Screening, the Laboratory of the Jô Clemente Institute (IJC) is the largest in Brazil in terms of the number of tests performed and currently offers the Expanded Newborn Screening Test in the public health system of the city of São Paulo, covering the early diagnosis of approximately 50 diseases, including dozens of rare conditions. It is also a reference center for the treatment of phenylketonuria, biotinidase deficiency and congenital hypothyroidism, diseases detected in the Newborn Screening Test that can progress to intellectual disability if not treated correctly. In addition, the IJC produces and disseminates knowledge about intellectual disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and rare diseases. One of our focuses is to support and develop applied, technological and innovation research projects, in partnership with public or private bodies and teaching and research institutions, with the aim of generating knowledge for studies, information for people, products, services and new business models for the Organization.
