IMS Paulista has just gained a new living space related to the exhibition Xingu: contatos , on display at the cultural center. Located on the 9th floor of the IMS and now open to the public, the space features a selection of books and films written mainly by indigenous people. Posts are available to read and handle and shorts are projected on a screen. There is also a mural made up of illustrations and words in Kuikuro, with which the public can interact. With beanbags and rugs spread across the floor, the space is a welcoming place for adults and children to enjoy their time and learn a little more about the cultures of the original peoples. Open until April 9th, when the exhibition closes, the space was designed by IMS in partnership with Associação Vaga Lume, a civil society organization dedicated to the implementation and maintenance of libraries in traditional communities in the Legal Amazon, including indigenous and quilombolas, riverside communities and roadside communities.

Among the books presented are works by Daniel Munduruku, Cristino Wapichana, Julie Dorrico and Eliane Potiguara , among others. The short films shown include titles such as Mãtãnãg, the Encantada, by Shawara Maxakali and Charles Bicalho, O Verbo se Fez Carne, by Ziel Karapotó, and A História da Cutia e do Macaco, by Wisio Kawaiwete and Coletivo das Cineastas Xinguanas. The shorts have accessibility features, such as Libras, subtitles in Portuguese and audio description. So that the public can get closer to the Kuikuro vocabulary, one of the indigenous languages spoken in the Xingu territory, there is also a mural made up of words and illustrations. The panel pieces have two sides and can be rotated and handled. On one side, there is an illustration made by the artist Danirampe and, on the other, the corresponding word in Kuikuro, Portuguese and Braille.
Regarding the partnership, the Vaga Lume Association states: "We have been on the floor of community libraries in the Amazon for more than 20 years and we can see the impact of reading on the lives of children and older people, accessing literature by indigenous authors is expanding world reading and discover the richest aspects of original and contemporary culture." The space has mediators available to talk to the public and encourage enjoyment, reading and interaction.

Xingu Exhibition: contacts

On view since November 2022, the exhibition revisits the trajectory of struggles and resistance in the Xingu, the first large indigenous territory demarcated in Brazil, in 1961. Shown on the 7th and 8th floor of the cultural center, the exhibition presents multiple narratives and perspectives around of the territory, with emphasis on contemporary indigenous audiovisual production, which has one of its main centers in Xingu. The set includes six short films, made especially for the exhibition, written by Divino Tserewahú, Kamatxi Ikpeng, Kamikia Kisêdjê, Kujãesage Kaiabi, Piratá Waurá and Coletivo Kuikuro de Cinema. The exhibition also features an unpublished work by artist Denilson Baniwa, photographs produced by indigenous communicators from Rede Xingu +, and a mural, with Upper Xingu graphics, created by artist Wally Amaru on the gable of a building on Rua da Consolação. In dialogue, images, reports and other documents produced in Xingu by non-indigenous people since the end of the 19th century are displayed. The curation team is made up of filmmaker Takumã Kuikuro , director of documentaries such as As hyper Mulheres (2011), journalist Guilherme Freitas , assistant editor of serrote, an IMS essay magazine, and curatorial assistant Marina Frúgoli .
