Born in Rio de Janeiro, Di Cavalcanti is one of the most famous names in Brazilian modern art. Even almost 50 years after his death, the artist remains renowned, with paintings valued at more than 20 million reais .

The artist's name returned to the headlines of major newspapers last week after one of his most famous works, " As Mulatas ", from 1962, was stabbed by vandals who invaded the Planalto Palace,National Congress and the Supreme Federal Court building. for political reasons. Emiliano Augusto Cavalcanti de Albuquerque e Melo was known for portraying Brazil faithfully , displaying in his works the Brazilian people in all their facets: from black women, men, children, workers, samba dancers, peripheral people , and many others. When he came to São Paulo to study Law, the artist met Oswald de Andrade , and together they created the Semana de Arte Moderna , a landmark of modernism in the country.
