Design Prize 2019: meet the winners of the ten categories

Designers Philippe Starck, Michael Anastassiades and Sabine Marcelis were among those who won the Madonnina statuette in the third edition of the award

In its third edition, the Design Prize recognizes 11 winners in ten categories and draws attention to talents and relevant projects in various areas. There was the consecration of the famous Philippe Starck, but the spotlight also highlighted the talent of the new designer Sabine Marcelis and Virgil Abloh, who emerges as artistic director at Louis Vuitton. The global award also recognized other manifestations that reinforce the broad nature of design, such as art exhibitions and social impact initiatives. Among them, a solution that prevents the loss of drinking water in African countries and forensic investigation technology applied to the investigation of human rights violations. Lifelong Achievement Winner: Philippe Starck The Frenchman is known worldwide for the various facets of design he explores. Communication Winner: Virgil Abloh Artistic director of LV men's fashion collections and executive director of the Off-White brand, which he founded, Abloh was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine.

Best Designer Winner: Michael Anastassiadis Minimalist, utilitarian, interactive and artistic. These are some of the characteristics of his work, with an emphasis on lighting design, but with creations in the fields of furniture and technology. In this category, he beat the fierce competition with the Japanese studio Nendo and the Spanish Patricia Urquiola.

In the Artistic Realm Winner: Exhibition"On Air", by Tomás Saraceno The Argentine artist's exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo, in Paris, revealed the strength of presences that float in the air and how they interact with people.

Social Impact Winner:
Warka Water, by Arturo Vittori (public choice) Tests the air as a potential source of water, aiming to avoid shortages in Ethiopia, Haiti, Togo and Cameroon. One kit connects to the Warka tower where the water is collected.

Winner: Forensic Architecture (jury choice) At the Center for Architectural Research at Goldsmiths College, University of London, this research group involves architects, filmmakers, journalists, scientists and lawyers. Its goal is to use investigative technology to identify cases of human rights violations, in collaboration with international courts, human rights organizations and environmental justice groups. Experimentation Winner: Formafantasma Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin developed Ore Streams, a research study on electronic waste recycling, for three years.

Project Curation Winners: Andrés Jaque, Ippolito Pestellini Laparelli, Bregtje van der Haak and Mirjan Varadinis They chose the works for the Manifesta 12 biennial, which took place in Palermo, Italy. The nomadic event travels across Europe (the next one is in Marseille, France) and brings together emerging and innovative international artists, as well as creative experiences and dialogues. Best Design Reveal Winner: Sabine Marcelis The designer created in New Zealand and based in the Netherlands stood out for her poetic look at light and her inventive use of neon, reflective surfaces and color translucency.

Distribution Winner: JINS The Japanese eyewear brand has positioned itself with its high-quality glasses and strengthens partnerships with renowned artists and designers.
