The
jabuticaba tree is a beloved plant that reflects tropicality and is present in the affective memory of many Brazilians. After all, who doesn't have memories of looking for its fruits on balconies and in squares, experiencing the sweet flavor of that round fruit, with a skin that varies from light purple to dark. But after all,
how should this species be cultivated ? To answer this question, we invited landscapers
Catê Poli and João Jadão , who designed the
CASACOR Rooftop for
CASACOR São Paulo 2021. According to the pair of experts, it is "a classic in landscaping". "The The jabuticaba tree is native to the Atlantic Forest and is quite resistant. It can be planted both in the ground and in pots, adapting well to the design of apartment balconies, for example."
- There are several species of jabuticaba trees, but landscapers highlight two main ones to grow at home: the
Sabará , which produces small and medium-sized fruits, but has a slightly slower development, and the
Hybrid , which produces faster and more often throughout the year. "They can be planted as seeds, but it is also possible to purchase a large seedling, as it is an
easy species to transplant ."

"If you choose to use seeds, growth is slow, with fruits developing from the tenth year onwards", highlight Cate Poli and João Jadão.

Jabuticaba trees can reach up to ten meters in height and can be planted in gardens, balconies and even pots. "The important thing to know is that this species requires full sun and plenty of water, so in the case of covered balconies,
they should be close to of the windows ", they highlight. If you plan to plant jabuticaba trees in a more enclosed area, you need to be extra careful, as these species are
more susceptible to pests such as aphids and mealybugs. Therefore, experts recommend growing the plant in open areas.
Because they have small leaves, they are
wind-resistant and can withstand high temperatures , developing well in tropical and subtropical climates. "As for water, jabuticaba trees require daily irrigation to remain attractive, especially during times of scarce rain." , they say. By following these precautions, jabuticaba trees can bear fruit all year round, although their
most fertile period is between August and September .
