The Book Day, celebrated on April 23, is an invitation to rethink reading amid the hustle of contemporary life. In this sense, some places in São Paulo turn the habit of reading into a broader experience combining bookstores with cafés that encourage lingering, pausing and gathering.

In different styles and approaches, these places reveal a more everyday way of relating to books. Below, we list 7 must-visit spots in São Paulo for those who love to dive into a good book while enjoying a hot coffee. Check it out!

Barouche

Originally created at Largo do Arouche, Barouche moved to Vila Madalena with the proposal of combining café and bookstore. There are approximately 2,000 carefully selected titles, offering a complete cultural experience for book lovers.

In addition, the space features a full menu of snacks, signature cocktails, wines – staying true to its initial concept! Original and cozy, Barouche has already been recognized by Folha de S. Paulo as the city's best cinema café/bar thanks to its second location, at Cinesala.

  • Address: Rua Medeiros de Albuquerque, 401 - Vila Madalena

Cuia, at Livraria Megafauna

A blend of café, restaurant and bar, Cuia shares the space with the shelves of Livraria Megafauna. The address is simply one of the most iconic in São Paulo: the Copan building, located downtown.

The kitchen is led by chef Bel Coelho, who highlights Brazilian ingredients and different culinary techniques. A cultural and, at the same time, gastronomic program to savor a coffee (or lunch and dinner!) unhurriedly among the books.

  • Address: Avenida Ipiranga, 200, loja 48 térreo Ed. Copan - República

Cafeteria and Livraria da Tarde

Livraria da Tarde, in Pinheiros, was born from Monica Carvalho's dream of creating a space filled with books, where the community of readers could meet, exchange ideas and engage in dialogue. Its curation covers works of general literature, arts, humanities, business and children's and young adult.

The space hosts several cultural events, such as book clubs, book launches and discussion circles. To accompany, a menu full of coffees, savory bites and sweets from Cafeteria da Tarde.

  • Address: Rua Cônego Eugênio Leite, 956 - Pinheiros

Partícula Café

Previously known as "Quanti Café," Partícula is an alternative and sustainable space in São Paulo's North Zone, in Santana. The establishment promotes a welcoming project, conducive to long hours of reading, coworking or inspiring conversations.

The menu is varied, ranging from breakfast to burgers and special dishes. Beyond the well-crafted decor, the venue also functions, on certain occasions, as a recording studio for the Partícula da Cultura project, inspired by the famous Tiny Desk.

  • Address: Rua Henrique Bernardelli, 93B - Santana

Gato Sem Rabo

Gato Sem Rabo is an independent street bookstore, located in Vila Buarque, central São Paulo. The space stands out thanks to a curation focused exclusively on books written by women, trans people and travestis. The focus is on literary and intellectual production from the Global South – without leaving out authors considered fundamental to the dilemmas of our time.

The café, integrated with the reading area, serves vegan treats and specialty coffees. A perfect combination for those seeking knowledge and good flavors.

  • Address: R. Maj. Sertório, 95 - Vila Buarque

Betc Havas Café

Created by the Betc Havas agency, the space was conceived as an "experience office" to add a touch of flavor to professional connections. Located in the heart of Jardins, it offers a project geared toward gatherings, coworking and the appreciation of music, art and literature.

On the ground floor, the Price Books bookstore operates, while the mezzanine features a gastronomic space called Allez-y, open from breakfast to dinner, including an executive menu for those who choose to dive into the pages (or the screens!) throughout the day.

  • Address: R. Oscar Freire, 1128 - Cerqueira César

Sami Café, at Livraria Martins Fontes

A classic on Avenida Paulista, Livraria Martins Fontes has gained a new gastronomic space to enjoy while catching up on reading. Sami Café occupies the mezzanine of the main store, in addition to being present at the Consolação unit.

This cozy spot offers a moment of pause amid the busiest avenue in São Paulo, with expertly pulled coffee, carefully crafted recipes and a wealth of books to dive into.

  • Address: Av. Paulista, 509 - loja 24 - Paraíso

Sebo Pura Poesia

Sebo Pura Poesia offers a welcoming and poetic project in Ipiranga, in the city's South Zone. With walls lined with antique books, rare works and a small café, the space offers options both for the most enthusiastic readers (in this case, it's worth joining the monthly book club or the choro performances) and for those who appreciate a relaxing moment of reading in a quiet room.

As for the café within the bookstore, options include a variety of drinks, coffees, sandwiches and ice creams. Beyond the atmosphere that seems \"out of the present time,\" the place offers a more sustainable option compared to buying new books.

  • Address: Rua Bom Pastor, 1308 - Ipiranga
