SP–Arte will debut in its next edition a new sector dedicated to contemporary design: Design Now, which will occupy part of the third floor of the Bienal Pavilion. The initiative expands the space for design within the fair and seeks to present recent works that reflect the diversity and vitality of Brazilian authorial design.

The selection brings together ten exhibitors, chosen to present works that reflect contemporary design production in the country. Taking part in the sector are Andreas Anwander together with Atelier Atlas and Alexandre Kissajikian, Anna Machado, Edel-Stein, Erico Gondim, Lilian Malta, Lucas Neves, Mel Kawahara, Oficina Umauma, Olga Treivas, and Vinicius Siega, offering an overview of current approaches and research in the field of design.

The sector is curated by researcher Livia Debbane, who in this edition takes on the role of the fair’s artistic director of design. Alongside Patricia Dranoff, she offers an attentive look at the transformations in contemporary design and the plurality of approaches present in Brazilian production.

“We say independent because they are all designers who, in addition to designing, run their own businesses, without an industry or a large commercial structure behind them. A model that is quite common in Brazil and that has enabled part of the boom in authorial design we are experiencing today,” says curator Livia Debbane.

With the launch of Design Now, SP–Arte expands the connections between art, object, and contemporary thought. The new space joins the fair’s other design-focused initiatives and helps consolidate the event as one of the main meeting points for the sector in Latin America.
