Helsinki Design Week began last Friday (8), the largest Nordic design and architecture festival. Under the theme "
Once Upon a Time ", the festival aims to tell the stories of the city and its creatives. Until September 17, the festival will be based in the
Merikortteli block in the Punavuori district – the Hietalahti Bay area that was a shipyard in the 19th century and is now
home to professionals and creative companies , covering areas such as graphic design and architecture, as well as a coffee roasting, a cinema and an auction house, among others.
More than
130 events are part of the festival's program –
which, this year, is spread throughout the city , and not just in the headquarters building –, from exhibitions, to discussion panels and design workshops for children.
Among the main events, the following stand out: o
Art Goes Showroom , HDF's partnership with Art Goes Kapakka, an urban culture festival that will host a series of interdisciplinary presentations that highlight the best of both brands;
Design Diplomacy , held in the homes of the ambassadors themselves (coming from Uruguay, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Latvia); and
Children's Design Week , which is a design party for the whole family, with classes including color anarchy, house games and a demonstration.
The industrial block, whose construction dates back to the inter-war period, still has the original ceiling and high windows, which let in a lot of light, and were the main reason for choosing the location. There, the machinery was replaced by studios, in which many solutions for the needs of our future were created. The studios form an
excellent setting for the design exhibition , which aims
to use existing facilities rather than set up a temporary set.
