Architecture studio Snøhetta is working towards a circular economy with its latest design: a chair made from recycled plastic and steel recovered from the Norwegian fish farming industry. The S-1500 chair, launched at Stockholm Design Week , features a body made entirely from discarded plastic and a subframe made from reclaimed steel. Created in collaboration with furniture manufacturer Nordic Comfort Products (NCP), the chair is made from recycled materials from local companies that produce large amounts of waste. These companies provide NCP with discarded fishing nets, cables and pipes left over from their operations, which are processed and ground into a granulated substance and then injected into a mold.
The structural design of the S-1500 chair was inspired by the classic R-48 by Norwegian modernist designer Bendt Winge, created in the late 1960s - also manufactured by NCP. Due to the popularity of Winge's R series - with over five million units sold only in Norway - NCP invited Snøhetta to redesign the classic piece with a simpler design.
